RGC In Quins Win

Head Coach Mark Jones expected a tough game and he got it against Carmarthen Quins “When we were accurate and disciplined we looked comfortable but poor discipline at times stopped any momentum we had.  The referee seemed harsh with us on a few occasions and Carmarthen were eager around the breakdown. When you added all that together then any momentum we had ended up stopping, but when we had the ball we looked far more comfortable.”

“Winning today keeps us in the play-off race, and gives us a chance of that top 4 finish. Llandovery have done us a favour beating Ebbw Vale and the Pontypridd result mean we are in a stronger position now then we were before kick off”

RGC stayed in the play-off race with a 5 try win against a Carmarthen Quins side that offered plenty at Eirias with over 2,300 in the stands.

The visitors opened the scoring with a penalty from Steffan Marshall and they had the best of the attacking play from kick off.

RGC surprised both Carmarthen and the crowd with a try when Carwyn Ap Myrddin took a quick tap penalty to break before passing to Tom Hughes to score.  Jacob Botica smashed over a conversion.

The boot of Marshall got another 3 points on the scoreboard as RGC were being made to work hard without the ball.

With only the 2nd attack of the game RGC picked up another try when Rhys Williams made a big break before Ap Myrddin dived over the line. Jacob Botica hit the extras.

RGC were creating some great lines with Botica and Hughes both showing some good reverse passing skills., and Ap Myridd grabbed his 2nd score with more great running.

Try number 4 came when Andrew Williams charged down a clearance kick and touched the ball down over the line.  Botica’s boot was on target to extend the lead.

RGC were 28-6 ahead, without controlling the game.

Carmarthen Quins ended the half with a well-deserved try.  After opting the kick a penalty to touch and winning the line-out the pack drove and kept on moving before going in under the posts. Marshall kicked the conversion.

The 2nd half began with some huge pressure on the RGC line, as Quins tried to work the ball wide and find that gap to go through. Former RGC player Iolo Evans and the rest of the backs passed the ball well but Andrew Williams, Josh Leach and Huw Worthington all made some big tackles.

RGC would have been delighted to keep Quins at bay after some intense pressure from the visitors, with a number of penalties being awarded to Carmarthen.  As much as his tries were vital, Carwyn Ap Myrddin pounced on a loose ball to stop the RGC attacks at a crucial period in the game.

A tackle of note was when Rhys Williams stopped a Quins runner in his tracks, and it put the player on the ground and the crowd on their feet.

Bagshaw went close to scoring after he split the defence with a run but was put into touch.

That was one of the only real attacks from the Gogs, and it was no surprise when Quins picked up a try when winger Griffiths ran in with Thomas converting.

The pack then won a penalty after a good scrum and it gave the chance of a penalty to Botica, and he didn’t disappoint with the 3 points.

Worthington on his 100th appearance along with Andrew Williams were working hard in the pack, and it wasn’t a 2nd half for the aficionados of ball in hand rugby.

With the lead extended to 11 points and 10 minutes to play the tension eased from the crowd and RGC finished the game with try number 5, after Rhys Williams made the run and Tom Seddon supplied the finish. Botica was successful with the conversion.

RGC head to Pontypridd next Saturday with both sides level on points in 4th place.
